From space operas to sweet high school romances, here’s everything people loved and watched in February

While the world around us is slowly adjusting to the new normal, new movies and TV shows can still be counted on to serve as an escape or a fun distraction. This month saw some exciting new titles added to the libraries of your favourite OTT platforms. Netflix’s beloved pair Lara Jean and Peter Kravinsky return for a new adventure with the third instalment of the To All the Boys series, and we got a glimpse into the affluent real-life weddings of modern Indian couples through The Big Day. This month was also great for fans of mysteries and thrillers, with The Girl on the Train, Drishyam 2, and Behind Her Eyes releasing for their viewing pleasure. In case you missed some of these titles, here’s a round-up of everything people loved and watched in February.

To All the Boys: Always and Forever

The third instalment of Netflix’s To All the Boys series dropped just in time for Valentine’s Day earlier this month. The heartwarming high school romance follows the relationship journey of Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo). In this one, the two of them have reached the end of their high school and have to make life-changing decisions about their future after graduation.

Drishyam 2

The sequel to the 2013 Malayalam thriller Drishyam released this month. Most of the original cast reprises their roles in the second instalment, with the movie picking up six years after the events of the first one. In case you haven’t seen the first film, or the Hindi remake of the same name, it’s about a family whose life takes a turn for the worse when they commit an accidental crime, leading the patriarch, Georgekutty, to do everything he can to protect them from getting caught. In the second movie, a fateful incident leads to the police discovering a damning connection between the missing body from six years ago and Georgekutty and his family.

I Care a Lot

Rosamund Pike’s much-talked-about 2020 movie, which landed her a Golden Globe nomination, finally released on Netflix. In the critically acclaimed psychological thriller, Pike plays the role of a shady legal guardian who unwittingly becomes the target of a powerful gangster after her latest scam goes awry. The movie also stars Game Of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, Chris Messina, and Dianne Wiest.

Malcolm and Marie

Director Sam Levinson's black-and-white romantic drama stars Zendaya and John David-Washington as the titular characters. The film takes place over the course of a night where filmmaker Malcolm and his girlfriend Marie return home after the premiere of his first movie. Tensions rise to the surface as the deep-seated resentments burst forth in the form of an argument.

The Girl on the Train

The psychological thriller is based on author Paula Hawkin’s book of the same name. The book has been adapted previously into a movie starring Emily Blunt and Justin Theroux. The film follows alcoholic widow Mira (Parineeti Chopra) as she gets embroiled in a missing person’s investigation after witnessing something out of the ordinary during her regular commute. The mystery thriller also stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Kirti Kulhari, and Avinash Tiwary.

Space Sweepers

Descendants of the Sun’s Song Joong-ki stars in this space drama about a rag-tag group called the Space Sweepers who make a living off salvaging space debris. The Korean movie is set in the year 2092, in a dystopian future where the Earth is dying and a giant corporation called UTS has built an orbiting home for the elite and the rest are left to fend for themselves. One fateful debris chase results in the Space Sweepers finding a spaceship with a much-wanted humanoid robot inside it and decides to use it to demand a ransom from UTS.

The Big Day

This Netflix original dives deep into the multibillion-dollar wedding industry in our country by following six engaged couples as they go about planning their, well, Big Day. Through three episodes, the series attempts to break down everything that goes into making an Instagram-worthy wedding day. There are bridezillas, tearjerking moments, celebrity cameos, and a lot of wedding planning.

Bliss

Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek star in this sci-fi drama about the blurred lines between reality and simulation. Greg meets Isabel, who tells him that they have been living in a simulated reality all this while. But when this newfound realisation results in their ‘Bliss’ life bleeding into the real world, he needs to figure out what’s real and what’s simulated.

1962: The War in the Hills

Abhay Deol stars in this Disney+ Hotstar original series about the Indo-China war. Inspired by true events, the series is a fictional take on the battle fought by 125 Indian soldiers defending a strategic pass against a battalion of 3,000 Chinese soldiers. The story also tracks their personal battles and their lives, heartbreaks, and friendships.

Firefly Lane

Based on the novel of the same name by Kristin Hannah, the 10-episode long series follows the lives of two teenage girls, living on Firefly Lane, in the 1970s to all the way through their adulthood. It stars Katherine Heigl as Tully, a famous daytime talk show host, and Sarah Chalke as Kate, Tully’s best friend and a housewife who is trying to get her life pieced back together after a divorce.

Behind Her Eyes

Add this to Netflix's long list of A-plus twisty psychological thrillers that the platform has to offer. In this British thriller, a single mother’s life turns upside down when she begins an affair with her psychiatrist boss while secretly becoming friends with his wife. The love triangle dissolves into a dark and suspenseful tale of twisted revelations and dangerous secrets.
