A little bit of heritage recall will offer you a nuanced understanding of the pocket square.
The first recorded history of this men’s fashion accessory was somewhere between the years 1377 and 1399 when King Richard II of England is said to have invented the cloth handkerchief for men.
But some accounts place the origins of the pocket square back to Egypt in the Middle Ages. Small red-coloured bandages were used by the men living around the River Nile as a symbol of wealth.
Whatever may be its origins, it was not until the 1920s when the introduction of a two-piece suit brought the pocket square to the forefront of men’s fashion, and the handkerchief earned the voguish moniker of pocket squares.
The super-success of a series such as Mad Men, in which those maddingly cool admen wore them all the time — from the office to a meeting and then to the bar — led to the vertiginous rise of pocket squares. From then to now, the pocket square has seen good times, and some rough times when it was discarded in favour of the other classic neckpiece — the scarf.

Fashion’s It Boys have rediscovered the magic they add to their suit or blazer when they head out to a formal red carpet event, a wedding, or on a romantic date where they want to make the right impression.

There are several ways in which you can fold a pocket square. The Presidential Fold is said to be a classic. Sharp enough and yet not loud, if you remember the way Don Draper, the lead protagonist of Mad Men, and generations of men ever since have sported it.

The one-point fold, in which it looks like an envelope: rectangular and a point sticking out of the pocket. The two-point fold with two offset triangular points sticking out. There is a wing-puffed fold, in which the pocket square has a somewhat domed shape with two peaks of wings slightly apart. The triangle fold, also called ‘corner up’, is one of the easiest ways to fold the pocket square — with only one corner protruding out from the pocket.

Are there any etiquettes of wearing a pocket square?
Wearing pocket square with suit- Just as there are rules that govern how to match your tie with your socks, or what colour suit must be donned for which occasion, there are rules that govern the sporting of pocket squares.
- Expert bespoke tailors and stylists will tell you, for instance, that it is sacrilege to combine a light-coloured suit, such as a pastel linen suit that you would wear to the races or a brunch on a summer day, with light coloured pocket squares. Instead, opt for bright colours that work as instant pick-me-ups and provide a pop of colour to the most sombre of suits. If you are wearing a blue suit, a light pink or a pastel blue pocket square imparts that lovely colour pop to your look. The converse is also true: light or pastel shades of pocket squares with classic dark suits work best.

Solid or light coloured pocket squares with bold borders work well for corporate wear, too. It is important to remember that if you are wearing a tie, the pocket square may recall its colours and patterns, but the fabric must be different.
- A pocket square should complement your tie or scarf and not match it. A silk tie demands a pocket square made of linen or cotton and a silk scarf requires to be combined with a tie of less shiny fabric.

If you are wearing a pocket square with a tuxedo, you need to ensure that it does not clash with the bow tie. Try and keep it white and ideally in silk fabric and not go overboard on the fold.
