Underpass project to decongest Mahavir Chk leads to congestion

Gurgaon: While the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon is going to launch “transform Sadar bazar” initiative from next week by making it pedestrian-friendly, the surrounding area is hugely congested due to the ongoing construction work of the underpass at Mahavir Chowk.
The decongestion project has lead to a serious issue of heavy traffic throughout the day. The commuters said that for the last one week they are suffering due to the lack of coordination between civic authorities and police.
The project at Mahavir Chowk was initiated in January 2020, apart from the widening of roads the public works department (PWD) has been constructing an underpass and a skywalk to reduce congestion on the busy junction.
The project was expected to be completed in nine months, but due to lockdown and shortage of manpower it is still not completed.
The authorities have closed the intersection road at Mahavir chowk that starts from old Delhi-Gurgaon road and ends on the bus stand road. Traffic coming from the railway road and Sadar bazar have to divert towards the bus stand to get a turn for MG Road and old Delhi road.
Besides heavy traffic, the junction sees high pedestrian movement as it connects Sadar bazar, city’s biggest commercial hub, with Gurgaon bus stand.
According to a senior official of PWD, they have closed the road because they are extending the construction work towards the bus stand and will also built a 230m skywalk which will have escalators on all four sides.
