A man and two children, aged three and five, died in a fire in Crossroads, Cape Town on Friday morning.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said firefighters were alerted to the blaze at around 05:30.

"An informal structure was alight in the Thabo Mbeki informal settlement on the corner of Symphony Way and Govan Mbeki Road. Gugulethu's fire crew was first on the scene and firefighters were told that there were people missing," he said.

The firefighters were able to extinguish the flames just after 06:00.

After searching the property, they found the bodies of the man, a five-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy.

"The cause of the fire is unknown and the scene was handed over to the South African Police Service," said Carelse.
