I can never forget the inauguration ceremony of the hospital at Dick oya in Sri Lanka. This modern hospital will help many. These efforts in healthcare, that too for the Tamil community, would have made MGR happy. MGR's governance was full of compassion towards the poor, subjects of healthcare, education & women empowerment were dear to him. A few years ago I went to Sri Lanka, where MGR was born. India is honoured to be working for Tamils in Sri Lanka in health sector.

Checking lax at TN airports and stations

Tamil Nadu may have tightened quarantine rules for those arriving from Kerala and Maharashtra because of the high incidence of Covid-19 cases, but checks are not stringent at airports, railway stations and at the border. Passengers arriving at Chennai airport undergo a thermal check, while those coming by trains and those driving in are not checked at the border.

Customs seizes Rs 70L in foreign currencies

Customs officials at Chennai international airport on Wednesday seized foreign currencies worth around ?70lakh (3.57 lakh Saudi riyals and $2,000) from a passenger and arrested him. Based on intelligence inputs, customs officials intercepted Noormohamed Sultan, 60, of Kancheepuram after he cleared immigration and was proceeding towards security hold area for boarding an Indi-Go flight (6E-65) to Dubai.

Active Covid cases in city continue to increase

Tamil Nadu added 467 fresh cases and five deaths to the Covid-19 registry on Thursday. After 471discharges, there were 4,053 people in the active cases list. This pushed the cumulative case tally to 8,50,096 and the death toll to12,483.

15 days after 23 deaths, 6 killed in another TN fireworks unit blast

Barely two weeks after a blast ripped apart a fireworks unit at Sattur in Virudhunagar district killing 23 people, an explosion rocked a cracker unit at Kalayarkuruchi village in the district on Thursday killing six people. In all, 14 people sustained injuries and have been admitted to Sivakasi government hospital.

All Class IX-XI students will be promoted

Keeping with his populist pitch, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday declared nearly 27 lakh students belonging to Classes IX, X, and XI in TN to have passed this academic year without annual or board exam. The state will soon release guidelines for assessment of marks, he said.

Staff to retire at 60, TN saves Rs 5,000cr for now

In a bid to appease the large government workforce ahead of the assembly poll, the AIADMK government on Thursday raised the retirement age to 60 years from the existing 59. The move may help the government, which is at the fag-end of its tenure and is facing a fund crunch, to defer payment of Rs 5,000 crore towards retirement benefits in the next fiscal year. The decision, however, has evoked mixed response from government staff.
