From glossy lips and embellishments at Fashion East and Burberry to pops of colour at Matty Bovan and rouged cheeks at Molly Goddard—here are the best hair, beauty and makeup trends from LFW AW21
You can always count on London Fashion Week for a sense of fun and theatre, and this season didn’t disappoint, from Molly Goddard’s frothy pink dresses to Matty Bovan’s club-kid creations, this season was all about life after lockdown.
For hair and makeup, that meant cheerful pops of colour around the eyes, 3D embellishments on the face, dyetastic locks and intricate hair braiding. Elsewhere, last season’s emphasis on health and wellness was taken up a notch with ruddy rouged cheeks as seen at Simone Rocha and Roksanda, while classic red lips were replaced by a playful high gloss. Here are the hair, makeup and beauty trends you need to know from London Fashion Week AW21.

What you need to know:
Where last season it was all about dyeing whole heads of hair unlikely shades of hot pink and slime green, this season was about carefully chosen accents of colour. Think Christina Aguilera in the video for Dirrty, but make it fashion, and maybe a bit more underworld-like, which was the case at Art School courtesy of hairstylist Shon Ju. Or head towards the light with Matty Bovan’s psychedelic rainbow streaks.

What you need to know:
There was something very refreshing about the glossy lips on show this season. It was young and playful, but also soft and romantic. Forget sticky Juicy Tubes circa 2000, these glosses are lightweight and hydrating. Keep it natural and unassuming as at Fashion East’s Maximilian and Nensi Dojaka, or sex it up with a multi-dimensional high shine as seen at Halpern and Mark Fast for day-to-night glam.

What you need to know:
‘Get offline and get back to real life’ was the message at many shows this season. (Though of course, only when it is safe to do so.) This was particularly felt in the myriad 3D makeup embellishments—the kind you need to appreciate outside of Zoom. Take your cues from Isamaya Ffrench, who dotted star-like crystals around models’ faces for Burberry, or Janeen Witherspoon, who delicately placed torn astrantia flowers under eyes at Bora Aksu.

What you need to know:
This season’s nod to wellness took on a more literal sense with plenty of rouged, ruddy cheeks: let’s call it the Bridgerton effect. Look to Simone Rocha for that rosy debutante flush or Molly Goddard for hot-pink 1980s high glam.

What you need to know:
After nearly a year spent in lockdown, cheerful pops of colour to accentuate the eyes is exactly what the world needs right now. Take a leaf out of Preen by Thornton Bregazzi’s book with soft shades of lilac and mauve or go big with shocks of hot pink as seen at Molly Goddard.

What you need to know:
Lockdown’s go-to nostalgic hairstyle: the pigtail braids get a runway makeover this season. Intricately piled high or worn coming out of short crops at Simone Rocha (where punk met princess) or looped into buns at Bora Aksu for that Regency-era restraint.
