Phison Electronics, which specializes in flash storage devices and controller ICs, has put increased focus on enterprise, automotive and industrial applications while lowering sales generated from the consumer electronics sector as a proportion of company revenue to 30%.
Phison used to have as high as 80% of revenue generated from the consumer electronics segment. The proportion fell to only 30% in 2020, said the company, adding that sales of its embedded storage devices for use in non-CE applications will be driven by a ramp-up in orders from ODMs specializing in notebooks and other PCs over the next couple of years.
In particular, Phison is ramping up shipments of its PCIe Gen4 SSD controllers, which are already adopted by first-tier ODMs, the chipmaker noted. Shipments of its PCIe SSD controllers will register dramatic growth in 2021 and 2022, the company continued.
Phison has also started delivering its next-generation PCIe Gen5 SSD controller samples for design-ins, the company disclosed. Phison's PCIe Gen5 SSD controllers are designed for enterprise storage, data centers and gaming computers.
Phison spent NT$6.9 billion (US$247.8 million) on R&D in 2020, which accounted for 82% of the company's overall capital expenditures last year.
