Myanmar police detained a Japanese journalist at a protest in the commercial capital of Yangon, a colleague said on Friday, in the first detention of a foreign reporter since the military coup on Feb. 1.

An official at Japan’s foreign ministry told Reuters it was still trying to confirm the facts.

The country has been roiled by protests for weeks since the army seized power from elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and detained her and most of her government.
