The terms of legislative assemblies of four states -- Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and West Bengal -- are coming to an end in May and June.
Meanwhile, in Puducherry, President's Rule has been imposed and the assembly kept under suspended animation after the V Narayanasamy-led Congress government resigned earlier this week ahead of a vote of confidence.

-West Bengal elections to be held in 8 phases:
Elections for the West Bengal assembly will be held in eight phases, up from seven last time.
1st phase: Date of poll- 27 March
2nd phase: date of poll - 1 April
3rd phase: Date of poll - 6 April
4th phase: Date of poll - 10 April
5th phase: Date of poll -17 April
6th phase: Date of poll - 22 April
7th phase: Date of poll- 26 April
8th phase: Date of poll -29 April
-Election Commission to appoint 2 special observers for West Bengal polls; If needed third can be sent, said CEC.
-Puducherry:
Puducherry elections to be held on April 6.
-Tamil Nadu:
-The Assembly elections will be held in a single phase. Date of poll: 6 April. Counting on 2 May.
-Kerala:
-All elections in 14 districts in a single phase. Date of poll: 6 April, 2021
-Assam: Elections to be held in three phases.
1st phase: 47 constituencies in 12 districts. Date of poll: 27 March, 2021
2nd phase: 39 constituencies in 13 districts. Date of polling: 1 April, 2021
3rd phase: 40 constituencies in 12 districts. Date of Poll: 6 April, 2021
-Election Commission announces Assembly Election dates for Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Puducherry.

The terms of state assembly will be up to:
-Assam: up to 31 May, 2021 for total 126 seats.
-Tamil Nadu: up to 24 May, 2021 for total 234 seats.
-West Bengal: up to 30 May, 2021, 2021 for total 294 seats
-Kerala: up to 1 June, 2021 for total 140 seats
-Puducherry- up to 8 June, 2021 for total 30 seats
-"In the thick of the pandemic, ECI started test trials with elections to 18 seats to Rajya Sabha. After that, came the challenge of the Bihar elections, it was indeed a watershed moment for ECI. It proved to be a litmus test," added CEC.

-Elections for the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal that comprises 294 seats are set to be held soon as the current tenure ends on May 30.
-This will be the first elections after the rollout of Digital Voter ID cards. So, people exercising their franchise will be able to cast their vote by showing their e-electoral photo identity card.
