Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone Season 2 has seen a host of Zombies content such as the new Outbreak mode release alongside numerous others. One such addition is the return of Samantha Maxis a fan favourite from previous instalments. She’s a playable character in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies and as an operator in Warzone. In an interview with IGN India, Treyarch revealed how it treats Zombies’ story and decides on which characters to focus on.
“I think the thing that's really important is that the previous incarnations which we call the Aether story, which involve Richtofen and all those characters, that came to definite end at the end of Black Ops 4 season, and we were passionate about not rewriting his story,” says Craig Houston, Lead Writer at Treyarch. “One of the things I said was that those characters did what they did to try and create a singular world where Zombies didn't exist and unfortunately because of the experiments in World War II, they were only half right. This is no longer a time-travelling multi-dimensional story, this is grounded in Cold War.”
In addition to this, Houston states that the events of Black Ops 4 are meant to lead into the current spate of Zombies content found in Season 2.
“[A]t the end of the BO4 storyline, we had two clear characters that needed to be referenced going forward and that was Maxis and Edward Richtofen, the young versions of them both,” says Houston before hinting of what to expect from future updates. “So we have shown people what Maxis is up to, any other characters that might reappear will be dealt with in later seasons.”
All this means that Treyarch will try to ensure Zombies’ lore sticks close to Black Ops when possible.
“We’re also taking Weaver from the Campaign,” adds Treyarch Studio Creative Director Cory Lehmkuhl . “I think that another thing we look to do is how can we look to bring it closer to some of the Black Ops lore, which was really interesting, and it got us excited to be able to do that. We'll always look for opportunities to connect our universes where it makes sense.”
Aside from this, Treyarch revealed some telling Call of Duty Zombies player insights and explained what future seasons hold as well as detailing the challenges behind bringing Outbreak mode to life.
