At 48, highest 1-day cases in 6 weeks

Gurgaon: After remaining steady for nearly two months, daily Covid-19 cases in the city are again showing an upward trend. Gurgaon on Tuesday reported 48 cases, taking its total tally to 58,771. Before this, the highest single-day cases were recorded on January 13, nearly six weeks ago, when 51 people tested positive.
The last time Gurgaon saw more than 40 cases was on January 17, when 45 people had tested positive. After that, there was a downward trend. Since November 21, when 939 people tested positive, the city’s cases had been declining. In the past few weeks, less than 30 cases were being reported daily on an average.
The areas which are reporting more cases now are Tigra, Chandralok and Badshapur, Gurgaon chief medical officer Virender Yadav said. “The cases are not indicating a surge at present. Of the total 48, the new cases are 34 while the remaining 14 are last week’s pending cases that were on hold because the patients’ phone numbers and addresses were incorrect. We receive verification from Gurgaon police on Tuesday and thus they are added to the list. We are expecting a surge in mid-March,” said Yadav.
The health department confirmed that 42 patients recovered on Tuesday, taking the total recoveries to 58,176. No one succumbed to the infection. So far, 356 people in the city have died of Covid-19, of whom 274 had comorbidities. The city has a total of 239 active cases, and 204 of the patients are in home isolation. The recovery rate stands at 99% and the positivity rate is 0.6%, health officials said.
The health department urged people to follow the Covid-19 protocol as the cases are likely to rise in the coming days. “We have been witnessing a rise in cases as people are showing a casual attitude towards the infection. They should wear masks and maintain social distancing as we have not gained herd immunity till now and the vaccination drive for the masses is yet to start,” said Yadav.
On Tuesday, one person was sent to institutional quarantine facilities. So far, 8,10,860 people have been put under surveillance in Gurgaon. In the past 24 hours, the health authorities collected 2,760 samples for antigen and RT-PCR tests. So far, 8,07,274 samples have been sent for testing, of which 7,45,743 were negative while the results of 1,529 are awaited.

Meanwhile, 3,036 health workers got inoculated with the second dose of the vaccine at 66 session sites. The target set was to vaccinate 5,002 health workers.
At one of the session sites, where the target was 50 recipients, only 29 turned up. “We vaccinated 3,450 people, out of the total target of 6,502 on Tuesday,” said Gurgaon chief medical officer Virender Yadav. The authorities set up a session site for health workers on Tuesday for the first dose, as well as the central government had given directions to allow ESI hospital staff to be vaccinated too. However, only 414 frontline workers — 28% — turned up at 14 session sites to get inoculated. The health department had set the target of 1,450 frontline workers for Tuesday’s drive.
