During the inauguration event, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera can have 1.32 lakh spectators.
This is the first time in recent years that any Indian sports facility has been named after a sitting Prime Minister.President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad’s Motera on Wednesday ahead of the India vs England’s pink ball test match. The stadium, which is billed as the largest cricket stadium in the world, has been formally renamed Narendra Modi stadium. This is the first time in recent years that any Indian sports facility has been named after a sitting Prime Minister. In 2018, the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Uttar Pradesh was renamed after Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In terms of capacity, the Lucknow stadium as it is colloquially known is billed as the third largest international cricket stadium in the country.
During his inauguration speech, President Kovind mentioned the legendary Melbourne Cricket Ground and said that India today is feeling extremely proud that it is home to the largest stadium, which has beaten even the MCG in terms of sitting capacity. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was also present at the event, said that the top-notch facilities at Motera can help India in hosting Olympics also. Shah also spoke about his days working with PM Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He said that it was Modi and his vision about Motera ground that helped in achieving this mega task.
There are three aspects of Motera sports facilities. First is the Narendra Modi stadium. Second is the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave and Narainpura Sports Complex. Last year, Motera ground was the venue of former US President Donald Trump’s ‘Namaste Trump’ event.
During his speech, Shah also listed out series of projects that will be seen in Ahmedabad soon. From football to hockey, all kinds of sports will be played at two indoor stadiums that have been planned for Ahmedabad. Shah also added that the sports facilities are also part of PM Modi’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ model. He said that soon, all sports enthusiasts and athletes will be able to work at world-class facilities within India.
