GURUGRAM: In order to prevent sewer overflow, Haryana State Commission for Safai Karamchari and Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) have started installing a sensor-based monitoring system inside the manholes across the city on a pilot basis. Four sensors, one each at four manholes, were installed in the city on Tuesday.
Officials said that if successful, such sensors would be installed in all the manholes to prevent sewer overflow and ensure safety of those in-charge of cleaning these sewerages.
The sensor would detect the level of discharge or flow in the manhole and send an alert message when it reaches the overflow level to the sewer man, junior engineer, superintending engineer and other officials concerned, so that the manhole is cleaned in time. MCG superintending engineer Radheshyam said that the sensors were installed at four locations in Gurugram — Sector 10A, old railway road, Shivaji Park and Kadipur.
“We installed 10 such sensors in Rewari on a pilot basis and four in Gurugram on Tuesday. We had shortlisted only these two districts for the pilot run and if successful, this technology will be installed across the state. There are two main advantages of installing this technology in manholes. First, that it would prevent sewage overflow and another is that our sewer men would be informed well in time about the level of flow in the manholes so that it can be cleaned using machines and they don’t have to enter in the manholes to clean it,” said Krishan Kumar, chairman of Haryana State Commission for Safai Karamchari.
According to MCG officials, they are identifying the sewer-overflow prone areas to install these sensors.
Meanwhile, the residents said that these sensors, if successful in the pilot run, should be installed in the frequently-leaking manholes in the city. “Technology is required to monitor sewer overflow. Moreover, we don’t want sewer men to enter the manholes to clean them whenever overflow happens. So, this sensor-based monitoring system will help us keep a check and simultaneously ensure safety of our sewer men,” said Dheeraj Kumar, joint commissioner for Swachh Bharat Mission, MCG.
