India vs England: 'Why is Ben Stokes Laughing?' - Clear Drop Catch Causes Social Media Flutter

A Ben Stokes non-catch off Shubman Gill created unnecessary displeasure for Joe Root and Stuart Broad, and plenty of chatter on social media in the ongoing third Test between India and England at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad. The incident happened in the second over when Broad found Gill’s edge, the ball flying low to second slip. The on-field umpire gave the soft signal as out, but replays quickly showed Stokes had not caught it cleanly, thus giving Gill a reprieve. Third umpire C Shamshuddin, convinced after a couple of replays that Stokes had dropped the catch, overturned the soft signal.

The England camp was unhappy, with Stokes laughing sarcastically and Root, along with Broad, having a word with the on field umpire. In the end, though, the correct decision was made.

TV umpire was a bit too quick for my liking with that not out call considering that soft signal was out. But it was the right call. Enough evidence to over rule the on- field soft signal.

Why on earth is everyone going on and on about soft signal and do we have evidence etc etc? That was clearly grounded. Commentators will look for any excuse to find fault with umpires even when there’s absolutely no reason to.

This was not even a question of the fielder getting his fingers under the ball. The ball got to Stokes at least a couple of inches above the turf. Stokes dropped the ball. What are England complaining about?
