Coronavirus India Updates: Active Cases Fall Below 1.5 Lakh Again

Active cases of Covid-19 in India fell today after rising for five consecutive days, amid fears of resurgence and new restrictions.

Authorities reported 10,584 new cases in 24 hours according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m on Feb. 23. That’s lower than the 13,255 recoveries in the same period, taking active cases below the 1.5 lakh once again.

These infections now account for 1.36% of the total Covid-19 cases confirmed by the authorities since the pandemic reached India in January 2020.

On Tuesday, the ministry reported 78 deaths with the total tally at over 1.56 lakh. This accounts for 1.42% of the more than 1.1 crore coronavirus cases detected in India.

Some states including Maharashtra and Kerala have been advised by the Centre to increase the proportion of RT-PCR tests and regularly monitor mutant strains besides refocusing on strict surveillance and stringent containment in selected districts.

Maharashtra Chief Minister has warned of fresh lockdowns if people do not stick to wearing masks.

Global Update

Globally, cases crossed 111.9 million leaving over 2.48 million dead.

Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, suggested the U.S. may soon issue guidance easing public health protocols for people who are fully vaccinated. And the U.S. might be looking at a surge in vaccine availability next month.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he’s “very optimistic” that England’s restrictions on social contact will end in June, and airline bookings have started to surge in Britain.

Thailand may waive quarantines for vaccinated visitors to help revive tourism. Italy is imposing a new hard lockdown in areas close to the country’s original coronavirus epicenter.
