Chinese handset brands have continued to make headway in the India market despite tensions at the two countries' border areas, according to local media reports in India.
Samsung Electronics remained the top handset vendor in India in fiscal 2020 ended March 31, 2020, with its handset revenues there growing 21% on year to INR523.15 billion (US$7.236 billion).
Xiaomi took second with revenues of INR381.96 billion.
However, China-based BBK Electronics will be the top vendor if the revenues of its two handset subsidiaries - Oppo Mobiles India and Vivo Mobile India - are combined.
The combination brought BBK's handset revenues in India in fiscal 2020 to INR636.35 billion, making the company the largest handset brand.
Xiaomi generated profit for the first time of INR4.01 billion for its handset business in India in fiscal 2020 compared to a loss of INR1.48 billion a year earlier. But Oppo and Vivo saw their losses continue to widen, with the former seeing its losses expand to INR22.01 billion from INR6.68 billion, and the latter widen to INR3.49 billion from INR1.89 billion.
Data compiled by Counterpoint Research showed that Chinese brands as a whole managed to expand their combined share in the India handset market to 75% in 2020, up from 72% a year earlier, with Xiaomi taking the largest share of 26%.
