Widows now part of 'Haldi Kumkum' celebrations

Thane, Feb 23 (UNI) Hundreds of widows in the districts of Thane, Palghar and Nashik especially from the tribal regions who were simply ignored by their family members and members of the society and not not made part of any function have a new lease of life. A silent reformation is presently happening in the tribal villages, thanks to the initiate taken by an NGO Shramajivi Sanghatana an organization working for the uplift of tribals in the state.
The Executive President of the Sanghatana, Sneha Dube Pandit, who mooted the move said that taking advantage of the present season of Haldi Kumkum we decided to give something better to the widows in the society and villages.
Accordingly, we organized groups of our women activists especially known as “Mahila Thingi” and organized such Haldi Kumkum in the villages following all Covid19 norms.

To our surprise we found that a number of widows have been all along kept out of the functions despite the fact the women contribute maximum to the family and the society.

The idea was taken well by everyone and the we could see a satisfaction in the face and heart of such women who have been in shell all along due to their beravity.

When we apply the Haldi Kumkum and treat them as any other women they feel delighted and respond quickly with a smile and thank us profusely, said Sneha.

She said that when we took stock of the entire on going work till now now we realized that of the total women participated in the Haldi Kumkum in the three districts at least 18.25% were widows. This indicates there is a dire need for bringing in many of them into the main stream she said.

She further said of the total 1370 who were part of the celebrations in the districts 250 were widows.

With regards to the districts she said, in Nashik District of the total women 21% percent were widows, in Talasari it was found that a record 58% women who took part in the function were widows. In Thane district when the programme was held in Bhiwandi a total of 18% were widows she said.

She said that this programme of Haldi Kumkum will go on till the month end and we plan to cover maximum of widows in it.
