Fans of large cruisers can rejoice. BMW Motorrad India has launched the new R 18 Classic in India. The bike, which will be brought here as a completely built-up (CBU) import, can now be ordered through the country’s BMW Motorrad dealer network.
Compared to the regular R 18, the R 18 Classic comes with a detachable windshield, saddlebags and passenger seat, 16-inch front wheel, additional LED headlight and electronic cruise control as standard. The bike is powered by BMW’s 1800cc twin-cylinder engine that produces 91 horsepower and 158Nm of torque, with the power travelling to the rear wheel via a shaft-drive setup. Top speed is said to be in the region of 180kph.
The R 18 Classic’s boxer-twin is mounted in a double-loop steel-tube chassis, with a telescopic fork at the front and centrally-placed mono-shock at the back, which is adjustable for preload. Wire-spoked wheels, disc brakes (with ABS) at both ends and laid-back ergonomics, with mid-mounted footpegs and high handlebars for a relaxed riding position, complete the package. For improved safety, the R 18 Classic also gets an electronic stability control system and three riding modes that allow riders to tailor the bike’s performance according to their individual preferences.
With its 365-kilo kerb weight, massive engine, outsize proportions and Rs 24 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag, the R 18 Classic is a larger-than-life cruiser that certainly isn’t for anyone. But for those who absolutely must live life king size, you’d better test ride one of these bad boys.
