R Ashwin Says Devon Conway is ‘Four Days Late’ But Twitter Users Don’t Agree
Conway’s talents went unnoticed during the Indian Premier League 2021 auction and he remained unsold. A huge loss for the teams who failed to add such a player to their rosters. As a result, Ashwin made this jibe at the player:

Cricket is a game of serious concentration but also friendly (and sometimes not so friendly) banter. While the banter on-field is largely missed by the general public, off-field sarcasm and commentary easily reaches the fans—thanks to social media. The latest social media sarcasm comes from India’s very own Ravichandran Ashwin, who had an interesting comment about New Zealand's Devon Conway. On Monday, Ashwin tweeted about Conway’s sensational innings when he pulled his team from a very weak point to eventual victory.
However, Conway’s talents went unnoticed during the Indian Premier League 2021 auction and he remained unsold. A huge loss for the teams who failed to add such a player to their rosters. As a result, Ashwin made this jibe at the player:
“Devon Conway is just 4 days late, but what a knock.”

Conway, who was set at a base price for Rs 50 lakhs was not lucrative enough for any of the eight IPL teams this year. Despite being in good form, his talents were not appreciated. After his impressive hit during the T-20 against Australia, Conway has become the first NZ player to hit five consecutive fifties in international T-20 cricket. It is interesting to note that Conway is fairly new to the world of international T-20 cricket as he made his debut in November 2020.
Surely, if the auction were to take place after this series, there would have been better chances of Conway being picked up.
Twitter, however, was divided on Ashwin’s comment. While NZ commentator pointedthat NZ players are systemically overlooked for “second-rate Australian players”, another user noted that IPL isn’t the whole and sole of cricket and playing well for one’s country is more important.
Here are some reactions:
Not sure it matters @ashwinravi99 NZ players have continually been overlooked for second rate Australians in the IPL for years. Seems outside of IPL big bash is the only comp looked at.. #player #NZcricket

He is already in prime form. Why does players like these go unnoticed in IPL auction, while players like Maxwell fetch so much. pic.twitter.com/a5j7Lnf50O

He doesn’t need net practice in the bookies league

Slightly unfortunate for a cricketer to say something like this :) The man has been in sublime form in T20sLast 5 T20 innings:99* v Aus93* v Canterbury91* v Auckland69* v Central Districts50 v Canterbury352 runs without dismissal! Even the last T20I vs PAK, he was good

Looks like think tank of the franchisees are lacking their depth in bidding for right players.

New Zealand and Australia faced off in the first T-20 match at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch where the Kiwis had a rough beginning. Conway became a saviour when NZ were 19/3 and scored a phenomenal 99 off 59 balls. The final score of 184/5 was too big for the Aussies to chase and NZ held the victory.
