THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 200 more local bodies in the state will be declared to have attained a cleanliness tag in the state on Wednesday.
The new list is in addition to the 589 local bodies that have already attained the status. Local self-government minister A C Moideen would make the declarations in this regard. The minister would also inaugurate 50 'take-a-break' wayside resting and amenities centres.
The government had in its 12-point programme announced that it would elevate 500 grama panchayats and 50 municipalities in the state to the clean category. Based on this, the Haritha Keralam Mission, Suchitwa Mission, Clean Kerala Company, Kudumbashree, and Employment Guarantee Mission jointly chose the local bodies that have excelled in solid waste management, for declaring them as clean. Till now, as many as 789 local bodies have attained this tag.
In addition to solid waste management, the clean tag is conferred on those bodies which have also excelled in the effective management of liquid and gas wastes.
For being declared as totally clean, there are 20 indicators including the processing of biodegradable wastes in the source, making necessary arrangements for scientific disposal of non-biodegradable wastes, ensuring green protocol in government offices and public and private functions, etc.
