In Indore, the daily collection of hazardous COVID-19 waste from hospitals has again seen a jump following a spike in positive cases in the city.
Daily generation and incineration of COVID-19 waste have jumped to around 1,800 kg per day in the last one week in Indore as against 1,000 kg in early this year, according to Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF) that handles Covid-19 and bio-medical waste for Indore and Ujjain division.
COVID waste in Indore had gone as high as 4,500 kg per day in November last year.
MP Pollution Control Board, Indore’s regional officer R K Gupta said, “There has been a slight increase in waste generation due to a rise in positive cases. Waste collection is done regularly as per the laid guidelines from various hospitals of Indore and other districts of the division.”
Asad Warsi, director at a CBWTF said, “Daily collection and incineration volumes have increased since last week. But as the city has seen such high numbers in past the process of collection, segregation and disposal has become very smooth and systematic at the generator level.”
On Sunday night, 104 people had tested positive for COVID-19. Warsi said amid a spike in Covid-19 waste, collection of bio-medical waste in the city has dropped by around 15 per cent amounting to around 6 tonne per day.
