AHMEDABAD: After a continuous downward trend for daily Covid-19 positive cases, Ahmedabad city on Sunday recorded a sharp spike with 66 cases. The rise was 47% higher compared to 45 recorded on February 20 and 27% higher compared to the weekly cases average of 52.
Ahmedabad district, as of Sunday evening, accounts for 527 out of 1,690 active cases, or 31% of state’s active cases. Recently, the Ahmedabad Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (AHNA) statistics had revealed that the bed occupancy in the city went above 125 after nearly two months.
“The city, like three other major cities of Gujarat, has recorded upwards trend in Covid-19 cases in the past few days. There are multiple reasons for it – with increase in the hours during night, several city hotspots have seen the gatherings back. More and more commercial establishments see the workers back from work-from-home scenario and there’s also a lack of etiquette when it comes to using sanitizer, wearing mask or maintaining social distancing,”said a city-based critical care specialist.
Ahmedabad city, in the past seven days, has recorded deaths of three positive patients. Experts point out that the city has recorded reduction in mortality after a long time, and the gains should not be lost with carelessness. “Covid-19 is very much active, and we should not let our guards down,” said Dr Bharat Gadhvi, president of AHNA.
