Tuticorin police firing: Probe commission begins 25th sitting

As many as 15 people died in Tuticorin police firing in May 2018
TUTICORIN: The Tamil Nadu-government appointed one-member Justice (retired) Aruna Jagadeesan commission that is probing the riots and police firing on the hundredth day of anti-Sterlite protest in Tuticorin on May 22, 2018, began its 25the sitting on Monday.
The inquiry will continue till Friday (February 26).
As many as 33 people have been summoned for examination in this session. A source in the commission said most of them are doctors from Tirunelveli and Tuticorin medical college hospitals, who treated the people injured in the untoward turn of events on May 22 and 23.
Staff at the Tuticorin collectorate, whose vehicles were burnt by the rioters, have also been summoned in this sitting.
So far, 918 people were summoned in the first 24 sittings in which 617 were examined by the commission. A total of 850 documents were marked till the last sitting.
On the recent repeated demand for government jobs matching the education qualification of the kin of those killed in the police excesses and for those who have been badly injured, the source said the commission had taken it to the notice of the state government through the Tuticorin district collector thrice thus far.
The issue was also taken to the notice of Tuticorin district collector K Senthil Raj by the chairman of the commission. The collector has assured to look into it and take it to the notice of senior officials concerned.
