No railing on bridge, broker dies as car falls into canal

Tarun’s (inset) car was pulled out with the help of a crane
Ghaziabad: A 30-year-old man died after his car skidded off a road and plunged into the Ganga canal in Ghaziabad’s Muradnagar area on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Tarun Tyagi, a property dealer, who used to live in the Morta area.
Police said Tyagi was heading to an ashram in Muradnagar around 2pm when the accident took place. One of Tyagi’s family members told police that he had left the house around 12pm without informing anyone. He used to go to the ashram on a daily basis.
Amit Kumar, the SHO of Muradnagar police station, said prima facie it appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle and due to the absence of railings for protection on the bridge, the car fell into the canal which had a heavy flow.
“The driver tried to rescue himself after breaking the window glass, but became unconscious and fell into the canal. The car too sank into the river. A passerby called the police and soon a team reached the spot and local divers were called for a rescue operation. The divers managed to drag the man out of the river after which he was rushed to a nearby hospital. However, he succumbed during treatment,” he added.
Police used a crane to pull out the car from the river and it took nearly two hours to resume the traffic movement on the road.
A senior police officer said, “We have written to the concerned authorities several times to set iron railing adjacent to the Ganga canal to curb the accidents, but no action has been taken so far.”
