Joe Biden will mark the US crossing 500,000 Covid deaths with a moment of silence and candle lighting ceremony at the White House.

The country is expected to pass the grim milestone on Monday, just over a year after the first confirmed US fatality due to the novel coronavirus.

The White House said Mr Biden would deliver remarks at sunset to honour those who lost their lives. He will be joined by first lady Jill Biden and vice-president Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff.

It comes as nearly half of Republican voters say they would join any new political party set up by former president Donald Trump.

Forty-six per cent of GOP respondents in a Suffolk University-USA Today said they would make the move, reaffirming the thumping support Mr Trump still attracts among right-wing voters.
