Kamra contempt case: SC adjourns hearing for four more weeks

New Delhi, Feb 22 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of contempt case against standup comedian Kunal Kamra for four weeks as one of the petitioners sought time to reply to an affidavit submitted by Kamra.
A bench comprising of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R Subhash Reddy asked the petitioner to file the reply within four weeks.
Petitions against Kamra have been filed by Abhyudaya Mishra, Skand Bajpai, Srirang Kantneshwarkar and Anuj Singh. They have alleged that Kamra has disrespected the highest court of the country through his derogatory tweets.
When Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was granted bail by the Supreme Court last year in abetment to suicide case, Kamra had called the Apex Court as "Supreme Joke of India", posted an edited photograph of the Supreme Court building with "saffron colour" walls and used derogatory language against Justice DY Chandrachud.
When asked, Attorney General of India K K Venugopal found the tweets "derogatory" and gave his consent for initiating a contempt proceedings against Kamra.
The 32-year-old standup comedian had told the court in his affidavit that his intent was not to disrespect the court. He stated that the judiciary is founded by its own actions not on criticism or commentary.
Kamra claimed that no institutions, even courts, are beyond criticism in a democracy.
