2 drug peddlers, bootlegger arrested; contraband recovered in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 21 (UNI) Two drug peddlers and a bootlegger were arrested with contraband during the last 24 hours in Kashmir valley, where drug peddler was booked under Public Safety Act (PSA).

A police spokesperson on Sunday said following specific information, a checkpoint was established at Batagund Crossing Tral. “Police intercepted a suspicious person, identified as Bashir Ahmad Dar, at the checking spot and during checking recovered 2 Kgs of Cannabis powder from him,” he said, adding the accused was arrested.

In Kulgam in south Kashmir, police intercepted a vehicle at a checking established at Vessu Chowk. “During checking, officers were able to recover 225 kgs of poppy straw concealed in nine gunny bags from the vehicle,” he said, adding the driver, identified as Subhash Chander, a resident of Karyal Khurad Colony Vishna, Jammu, was arrested.

He said a checkpoint was established at Dangiwacha in the apple township of Sopore. “Police intercepted a vehicle at the checkpoint and during checking recovered illicit liquor,” he said, adding the driver, identified as Tariq Ahmad Khan, was immediately taken into custody.

He said cases in all the incidents were registered in the respective police stations.

The spokesperson said earlier a huge cache of contraband substances were recovered from a drug peddler, identified as Shamaas Din Lone, in central Kashmir district of Gandernal. “Accordingly, the investigation of the cases was completed and the arrested drug peddler was booked under PSA after obtaining sanctions from the concerned authorities,” he said.

He said community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers and illegal activities in their neighbourhood, adding persons found indulging in drug peddling & illegal activities will be dealt as per law.

“Our consistent actions against illegal activities should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” he added.

Srinagar, Feb 21 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir administration asserted that preventive measures, including compulsory testing of all inbound travelers, have been strengthened at Srinagar International Airport amid rise in COVID-19 cases outside the Union Territory.

An official on Sunday said that these directions were given by Incharge Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary at a meeting convened here on Saturday to avert spread of the virus in the valley.
