Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle United: Marcus Rashford plays key role in home win

Marcus Rashford played a key role in a win over struggling Newcastle as Manchester United returned to second place in the Premier League.

The England striker helped the hosts overcome a stuttering start when he lashed in an 18th goal of the season by beating Karl Darlow at the near post after 30 minutes.

Allan Saint-Maximin then scored a deserved equaliser with his first goal since coming back from a two-month absence caused by coronavirus symptoms, slamming in after Harry Maguire failed to clear.

The Newcastle winger then threatened again early in the second half, but the game turned after 57 minutes when Daniel James re-established the lead.

That led to the visitors' confidence draining away, with Rashford then earning a penalty as he drew a foul from Joe Willock before Bruno Fernandes knocked in his 22nd goal of the season.

Defeat for Steve Bruce's side was a seventh in 10 Premier League games, leaving them three points above the drop zone - and a relegation scrap with Fulham is now set to ensue.

For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, it was only a second win in six league matches, and a welcome victory after a draw at West Brom last weekend.

But they remain 10 points behind leaders Manchester City, who beat Arsenal earlier on Sunday.

Massive dive by Rashford. Barely any ManU players booked for multiple yellow card offences (mostly on ASM). No penalty given to NUFC in first half ... business as usual at old Trafford

This could be danger for Newcastle, especially with Fulham starting to believe they can get out of it.
As a neutral good performance from utd, especially Shaw, matic and Rashford but apart from penalty fernandes was anonymous again.

I've nothing against Ole but even after reclaiming 2nd spot I just cant see this United side finishing top. I guess he'd have been ridiculed more had he said they've no chance.

We rode our luck, the error from the Newcastle keeper helped us and Rashfords dive was sublime, that St. Maximin is some player.

The title may be gone, but Man United can grab 2nd position. If they win a cup, it would be progress by Ole. It takes awhile to really compete for the title
NUFC fans whinge about Bruce & Ashley but they DEFINITELY have players that only try sometimes in games!

The players turn it on sparingly hoping for a shout out on MotD
It's like a tale of two teams. Shaw and Rashford make Martial and Wan Bissaka look like championship players. Martial has to go at the end of the season, hes had more than enough chances and Wan Bissaka needs competition from someone who will actually cross a ball.
