The assembly was paralysed on Friday over the issue as the Opposition BJP and the Congress stalled the business of the house forcing the Speaker to adjourn the house for seventh times during the day and finally adjourned it till 1030 hours today without transacting much business.
The Speaker who had convened an all-party meeting yesterday had directed the concerned Minister to make a statement in the house today and another statement about the progress in paddy procurement in the next seven days.
The Minister said paddy procurement made so far this year is 21 per cent more than the paddy procured during the last Kharif season. About 53.31 lakh metric tons of paddy was procured
He further said the paddy procurement in western and southern districts of the state has almost come to an end and the paddy procurement process in coastal and northern districts has reached its optimum level. The paddy procurement will end on March 31 next.
He said till yesterday 9.93 lakh farmers have sold their Kharif paddy to the government so far against 8.23 lakh farmers during the period last year. In total 9.56 lakh, farmers have sold their paddy by the end of procurement season on March 31 last year.
The Minister said the paddy procurement process was started in this KMS in the second week of November in Kalahandi and Bargarh district due to an early harvest.
All the 30 districts have been covered under the paddy procurement process, Mr Swain said adding that Paddy is being procured at the MSP of Rs 1868 per quintal as fixed by the central government.
As the protest continued in the house, the Speaker soon after the Minister’s statement adjourned the house at 1135 till 1600hrs.
