BENGALURU: A 56-year-old Chikkaballapura waterman died on Friday, nine days after he was administered the vaccine. The case has been reported as a serious adverse event following immunisation (AEFI) and is being investigated.
The man was given the first dose of Covishield on February
10. The next day, he developed chest pain and was admitted to a hospital. He was brought to Bengaluru and admitted to Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research. He was discharged on Thursday (Feb 18). On Friday, around 1pm, he again complained of chest pain and died while being moved to a hospital.
“After being discharged on Thursday, a medical officer from a primary health centre monitored his condition and he was found to have breathlessness. He was immediately referred to a hospital because of the acuteness of the situation. Before reaching the hospital he died,” said Dr BN Rajani, state deputy director, immunisation, health and family welfare department.
This is the fourth AEFI death in Karnataka. “Detailed AEFI investigation and committee meeting is awaited,” said health department authorities.
Two other serious AEFIs were reported on Friday. This includes the case of a 45-year-old anganwadi worker who was vaccinated on January 20. She developed pain in the limbs, fever, chills and was admitted to Nimhans for further care.
In Mysuru, a 40-year-old waterman who was given the first dose of the vaccine on February 12 suffered from muscle contraction in the right lower limb and has been admitted in hospital since February 15.
Karnataka crossed the six lakh-mark in vaccination coverage on Friday. In all, 6,26,752, or 57% of registered candidates have taken the vaccine.
