JORHAT: Activists of the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) staged a protest against the rise in prices of essential commodities in the upper Assam districts of Jorhat, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Majuli and Charaideo on Friday.
Aasu said the people of Assam, irrespective of classes, have been feeling the pinch of the price rise of all essential commodities, including petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas in the past few months and the government has not taken up any step to control it.
In Jorhat, too, the students’ body staged a demonstration in front of the Jorhat deputy commissioner’s office in support of their demand. In Majuli, the members led protests to Gejera, Jengrai and Pub Majuli. Aasu Majuli unit’s general secretary, Bitupan Sharma, said, “Our members have asked the government to take immediate steps to control the rise.”
The students’ body’s Golaghat district general secretary Prince Doley said it is because of the government’s ignorance that prices have gone up so much. “Despite repeated pleas, the government has not taken up any step in this regard. We demanded the government to do something about it immediately,” he added.
