New Delhi, Feb 19 (UNI) With an aim to improve the security situation and infusing confidence among the voters for violence free electoral process in West Bengal, the Centre has decided to deploy 123 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in poll bound state from February 25.
According to the sources in the security set up, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken a decision in this regard and has communicated to the state government to make all arrangements, including accommodation for the CAPF companies in compliance with the Covid-19 guidelines.
“Very soon a nodal officer of CAPFs would be meeting the state administration to resolve issues related to the deployment of troops in the state with an intention to conduct a fair and free election in the State”, the sources further said.
They also said at least 125 companies of CAPFs would reach West Bengal by February 25 and the troops would do the needful in advance in coordination with the State administration to ensure better law and order situation during the election campaign, as the West Bengal assembly elections are expected to be held in April-May this year.
The sources added that out of 125 companies of CAPFs, 60 such units would be drawn from Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the rest would be drawn from CISF, ITBP, SSB and BSF. They are likely to remain there till the elections get over in the state, they added
In the recent past both the ruling TMC and opposition BJP have claimed that their workers were killed in poll-related violence. The state also has a history of political killings.
