IPL auction 2021: 5 Superstars who went unsold at IPL auction in Chennai

IPL auction 2021: 5 Superstars who went unsold at IPL auction in Chennai- Every auction for the Indian Premier League is always unpredictable with some not-so-known players get picked for crores while some top cricketers remain unsold. On Thursday, at the mini-auction ahead of IPL 2021 in Chennai, there were a few surprises in the store as well. Some top players including Aaron Finch, Jason Roy and Alex Hales were left disappointed as franchises could not find a place for them.

Amongst 292 players up for auction, franchises had only 61 places to fill. Hence, it was expected that the majority of cricketers would remain unsold. But amongst the top unsold players, InsideSport has listed five of them who should have found a place in the

Aaron Finch: With 2005 runs in 87 IPL matches, Australia’s skipper in limited-overs cricket, Aaron Finch has been a regular in the IPL. But after an average 2020 campaign where he scored 268 runs from 12 matches, he was released by RCB. His base price of Rs 1 crore also could not tempt franchises.

Jason Roy: Another big name to miss out on IPL was Jason Roy. He was picked by Delhi Capitals for Rs 1.5 crore ahead of the 2020 IPL but the England opener opted out citing personal reasons. However, his IPL career hasn’t been bad. He has played only eight matches but has scored 179 runs including an unbeaten 91 for now-defunct Gujarat Lions in 2018.

Liam Plunkett: England pacer Liam Plunkett registered for the IPL 2021 auction after missing out on the last two seasons. But on Thursday, he was left disappointed as no franchises showed any interest in the English star. The fact that he played his last limited over cricket for the national team back in 2019. He is eager to return to the national set up and IPL would have been the best platform. But his base price of Rs 2 crore might have been a big let-down. He has only played 7 matches in the IPL for Delhi Dare Devils, scalping only four wickets at an economy of 9.0.

Alex Hales: One of the biggest upsets was Alex Hales who had a fantastic Big Bash League recently. With 543 runs from 15 matches at an average of 38.78 for Sydney Thunder, he was one of the biggest names in the auction. However, no franchises showed interest in him. One reason could his off-field conduct that has kept him out of the national side since 2019.

Kyle Mayers: The West Indies sensation slammed double ton on his debut and led his side to a historic win against Bangladesh earlier this month. With such kind of form, the 28-year-old from Barbados was expected to make his IPL debut. But despite his Rs 50 lakh base price, he remained unsold. One aspect could his below-average records in T20. In 54 innings in T20, he has scored only 688 runs at an average of 16.78 and 110.78 strike rate.
