Shivaji would have castigated RSS, BJP: Farmers' body

Shimla, Feb 19 (UNI) Had Chhatrapati Shivaji been alive, he would have hauled up the RSS, BJP and others for painting him in utterly "false communal colours", said Himachal Pradesh Kissan Sabha members here on Friday.
"Chhatrapati Shivaji would have surely taken the BJP rulers at the Centre to task for forcing lakhs of farmers to stay at the borders of Delhi for nearly three months in bitter cold and rain," HP Kissan Sabha's president Dr. Kuldip Singh Tanwar and State Secretary Dr Onkar Shad said on Shivaji's 391st birth anniversary.
The farmers' body claimed that Shivaji fought against the oppressive Mughal rule, but his strong secular credentials are proved by his famous letter written to Aurangzeb against the imposition of the Jiziya tax. "'Who Was Shivaji?', a book written by martyr Comrade Govind Pansare, brings out all these aspects of Shivaji admirably. That is why the memory of Shivaji is still revered by the peasantry and the people today even after nearly 400 years," the farmer leaders averred.
They said that Mahatma Jotirao Phule accurately described Shivaji as the 'king of the peasantry'.
The farmers' body made it clear that the current "historic" nationwide united farmers' struggle draws inspiration from Chhatrapati Shivaji's life and work, and from his fight against injustice, and vows to broaden and intensify this struggle until it achieves victory.
