SUV stuck on North Park Lake after driver attempts to cross frozen surface

Feb. 18—An SUV was trapped in ice on North Park Lake in McCandless after a 23-year-old man attempted to drive across the frozen lake late Wednesday night, according to Allegheny County Police.

The driver told investigators that he he mistook the lake for a parking lot.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Babcock Boulevard and Pearce Mill Road. First responders were called to the scene around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The rear end of the 2010 Subaru SUV became partially submerged when one of the vehicle's wheels broke through the ice. The driver was out of the vehicle when first responders arrived, according to police.

The name of the Franklin Park man who was driving the SUV was not released. He was not injured.

A tow truck from AAA was already at the scene when first responders arrived and had tried unsuccessfully to remove the vehicle. Firefighters from the Highland, Ingomar and Peebles departments also were unable to remove it, according to police.

Officials decided it would be safer to try to remove it after sunrise, and began recovery efforts Thursday morning, according to police. Crews used tow straps to drag the SUV out of the frozen lake onto the shoreline.

The man drove onto the lake from the area of the boat launch ramp, police said. There are signs marking the area as a boat launch and warning that all activities on the ice are prohibited except ice fishing, according to police.

The driver did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to police, who said they may file charges against him pending the result of their investigation.

"This incident serves as a reminder why all activities on the ice are prohibited, apart from ice fishing," Allegheny County Police said in a statement. "With the constantly changing temperatures and the flow of water beneath the ice, there is no way to ensure the ice is safe and will not give way."

"COVID-19 has shown that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are carrying multiple financial risks when trading internationally, such as nonpayment, lack of working capital and currency exposure," Pustilnick told FreightWaves. "We support Mexican exporters and freight forwarders by offering payment terms on their behalf, allowing them to focus on running their businesses and eliminating other risks." Other Latin America-focused freight and logistics-related startups that recently secured funding include Jüsto and Valoreo. Mexico City-based Valoreo, which is an acquirer of e-commerce businesses, announced Tuesday that it has raised $50 million in a seed funding round. Mexican online grocery delivery app Jüsto said Feb. 10 it raised $65 million in Series A funding. Founded in 2019, Mexico City-based Jüsto is an online grocery platform that keeps its own stock of goods, which it sends directly from its warehouses to customers' homes. Justo operates in Mexico City and the city of Queretaro, with plans to expand to other major Mexican cities. The company offers a broad range of products from both large consumer product companies and smaller local producers. "Our mission at Jüsto is to become Latin America's favorite supermarket within the next decade," Ricardo Weder, Jüsto founder and CEO, said in a statement. Valoreo is a technology-focused company that acquires and operates branded e-commerce businesses — operations that mainly sell and distribute their products on marketplace platforms like Amazon's. Valoreo said it will use its funding to acquire third-party merchants and build out their economies of scale. "We seek to partner hand-in-hand with Mercado Libre, Amazon and other regional marketplaces, as without these platforms this opportunity would not exist," Stefan Florea, Valoreo's co-founder and co-CEO, said in a statement. In 2020, the Latin American e-commerce market was one of the fastest growing e-commerce markets in the world at 37% year-over-year growth, according to Valoreo. Like e-commerce, Mundi officials said Mexico and Latin America is a huge potential market for financing B2B transactions in the cross-border marketplace. Mexico exported more than $417 billion in 2020, according to Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). The U.S. is Mexico's top export market, with almost 90% of its total exports consisting of new cars and tractor trucks, auto parts, electronic equipment, appliances and produce. Paulina Aguilar, Mundi's Mexico country director, said SMBs in developed countries represent between 35% and 60% in a country's foreign trade, while in Mexico the percentage is closer to 10%. Mundi wants to reduce the risks involved with many B2B transactions in the cross-border marketplace by financing Mexican exporters and freight forwarders through advancing payments for their cross-border transactions. Mundi now finances Mexican exports selling to any location in the world. "We have seen a lot of interest from companies exporting to other parts of the world," Pustilnick said. "We have clients in all types of industries — food, chemicals, plastics, medical supplies, textiles, logistics, footwear, wood and others. We are still focused on smaller clients but have grown as well with medium-sized exporters of up to $20 million a year in exports." Pustilnick also said Mundi will use the $7.8 million in funding to hire more employees and expand its features. "We are doubling down on our core product to grow our customer base," Pustilnick said. "This will be done by improving our current product, as well as launching new financial products that we hear interest [about] from current and prospective customers.     (Bloomberg) -- Tom Ricketts, the owner of the Chicago Cubs, says his bond broker Incapital LLC lost its technological edge while he spent the past decade building one of the most-successful teams in baseball.The billionaire believes he’s found a solution: merging the business with a San Francisco-based fintech startup called 280 CapMarkets LLC. The deal creates a new company called InspereX, with Ricketts serving as the chairman and largest owner. The companies declined to give terms of the deal.Founded in 1999 to connect corporate bond issuers with individual investors, Incapital initially had what Ricketts believes was excellent technology. And that was the point; the “In” in its name is short for “Internet.” But the industry hasn’t stood still.“We lost a little bit of our focus on technology,” Ricketts, who had been chief executive officer of Incapital until leaving to run the Cubs in 2009, said in an interview on Thursday. In 280 CapMarkets, which has roots in municipal-bond issuance, he found a partner “looking at what was next in the market.”Incapital underwrites new debt from government-sponsored enterprises and corporations as well as mortgage-backed securities, connecting issuers with investors. It also offers structured notes linked to assets like stocks, commodities and currencies. Part of 280 CapMarkets’ appeal is BondNav, its system that aims to streamline fixed-income workflows for customers.“The new company will become a unique fintech firm with a mission of improving fixed income distribution and trading for all market participants,” the companies said in a statement Thursday announcing the merger. They expect the transaction to close this quarter, with Incapital CEO John DesPrez having the same role at InspereX.The firm faces major competition from bigger Wall Street players. Banks dwarf them in terms of underwriting, and, in corporate bonds, the largest dealers just launched their own new digital platform. Called DirectBooks LLC, that system for managing the issuance of new debt has backing from firms including Bank of America Corp., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co.But InspereX has a niche: selling bonds to clients of financial advisers, not the major institutions banks often target.For 280 CapMarkets, reasons to merge with Ricketts’ firm include his baseball success.
