The onset of global warming is directly affecting the flora and fauna of the world. Many species in India are falling under the wrath of the ecological crisis too. Recently, Gir National Park announced two successful projects.
The first project was the vulture tagging project. The tagging will help get in-depth scientific information about the feeding sites, migration routes and general height at which these scavengers fly, preferred roosting and breeding sites and other information.
Dr Rajiv Kumar Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary(Forest & Environment Deptt) & MD SSNL shared the successful event, writing, “#Wildlife Division, Sasan Gir undertaken vulture tagging project, successfully tagged 2 Himalayan Griffon #Vultures with solar-powered satellite tags. So far, 8 individuals of 4 species have been tagged. It will go a long way in planning conservation actions for the #Vultures.”

Meanwhile, There has been seen a steady decline in the population of the lesser florican as per experts. The lesser florican, also known as the likh or kharmore, is the smallest in the bustard family and the only member of the genus Sypheotides. It is endemic to the Indian Subcontinent where it is found in tall grasslands and is best known for the leaping breeding displays made by the males during the monsoon season.
The hatching of three Lesser Florican chicks was done at the Gir Forest, which also marks this as the first time something like this has been done in the world.
Gupta tweeted the success of the event and wrote, “As per experts, the number of lesser florican declining rapidly all over India. Proud moment for Gujarat as successful Hatching of 3 Lesser Florican chicks done by @GujForestDept at @BVelavadar, maybe 1st time anywhere in the world. Now planning to make population safe by Captive Breeding.”
