Dell Technologies Japan has been selected to power the new “Yukawa-21” supercomputer at Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP), Kyoto University

Built on Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, we’re told “the new Yukawa-21 supercomputer system will have a peak performance of 1.3 PFLOPS, approx. 3.8x higher than the previous system, and will accelerate Kyoto University’s research in computational physics, including theoretical physics and the development of innovative methods for understanding complex natural phenomena.”

Now the Institute can provide researchers across Japan with a high-performance and stable computing environment to further the field of theoretical physics.

Designed to support complex and data-intensive workloads, Yukawa-21 comprises of 135 PowerEdge R840 servers equipped with 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable ProcessorsNVIDIA V100 Tensor Core GPUs and Dell EMC PowerSwitch Z9332F interconnection

The system also features a water-cooling system, enabling efficient system operation with optimally balanced power and cooling.

Sinya Aoki, Director at YITP said: “Our new supercomputer system named Yukawa-21, powered by Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, began operations in January 2021.

“In addition to fueling our Institution’s studies on particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, condensed matter physics and quantum information physics, the new supercomputer will open up fresh research opportunities to further the frontiers of theoretical physics across Japan.”

Chris Kelly, Vice President, Data Centre & Compute, Asia Pacific & Japan at Dell Technologies said:“High Performance Computing and the ability to handle compute-intensive tasks are critical for research institutions like Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics.

“By harnessing the capabilities of our Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, the Institute will aim to provide robust IT infrastructure to researchers in Japan to advance the field of theoretical physics,” Kelly concluded.
