NEP will help strengthen India-UK ties: British entrepreneur

New Delhi, Feb 17 (UNI) India's New Education Policy (NEP) will play a key role in strengthening the India-UK ties by allowing foreign Universities to enter its academic space, British Indian entrepreneur Karan Faridoon Bilimoria said here on Wednesday.
"Earlier, the Manmohan Singh regime got very close to allowing foreign universities to be set up in India, but somehow the plan could not see the light of day, which will now be possible via NEP,'' said Mr Bilimoria, during a virtual session on 'India-UK Bilateral Relations, organised by Ananta Aspen Centre and Aspen Institute, UK.
''The University of Birmingham is very much interested in investing and bringing its campuses to India as will many other universities which have campuses in China and Malaysia.
''I see it as a great opportunity for India to have such big world-class institutions, having student and faculty exchanges, academic collaboration programmes with them. The potential is enormous,' ' he added.
''When we removed the two-years postgraduation work visa for international students studying in UK, the number of Indian students dropped rapidly.
''However, we have now decided to reintroduce it and this mere announcement has once again got the Indian students interested as it would allow them to stay back in the United Kingdom and earn a living and gain work experience here,'' he said.
Speaking on the new points-based immigration system, the University Chancellor said, "We will have to watch it closely to see if it genuinely makes it easier for people to come and work in UK."
Among the speakers were Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Director General Chandrajit Banarjee, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd Executive Vice Chairperson Shobana Kamineni, and Thomas Lloyd Managing Director Nandita Sahgal Tully with Anant Aspen Centre's Founding Trustee and Institute of Economic Growth Chairman Tarun Das as chair.
