Retired Cuttack doctor duped of Rs 77 lakh by fraudsters

BHUBANESWAR: Sanatan Mohanty, a retired doctor living in CDA Sector-7 area of Cuttack, was duped of Rs 77 lakh from his SBI account by cyber criminals. They cheated the doctor on the pretext of activating the SIM card of his mobile phone. The incident came to light when the doctor lodged a complaint regarding the fraudulent transactions amounting to Rs 77,86,727 with the cyber police station in Cuttack.
As per the complaint, Mohanty said he received a text message on his mobile phone that his BSNL SIM will get deactivated soon. He tried to call the BSNL official but didn’t get any response. On February 9, he received a call where he was told that his BSNL SIM card will get deactivated soon. If was told to follow the caller’s instructions and recharge with Rs 10. During the process the callers collected Mohanty’s bank and ATM card details.
According to the doctor’s complaint, his BSNL number is attached to different bank accounts. The criminals hacked into the accounts and took away the money. “I received a message from SBI that my ATM card has been blocked. I went to SBI, Bidanasi branch, and came to know that Rs 25,292.98 and Rs 24,284.21 have been deducted from my bank account in two transactions,” Mohanty said in his complaint.
“On February 15, I went to Tulasipur SBI branch and the branch official said multiple transactions have been made from my account between February 9 and 15. A total of Rs 77,86,727 have been siphoned off from my account,” he added.
Narendra Mohanty, the IIC of cyber police station, said they are trying to nab the accused.
