Mumbai: Contraband worth Rs 2.58 lakh seized at SRA flat

MUMBAI: Some unknown persons are suspected to have broken into an unoccupied flat at Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building at Sainath Society in Sangharsh Nagar and stored 12.9 kg ganja worth Rs 2.58 lakh.
Acting on a tip-off, the Sakinaka police team entered the flat with the help of panch (Witness) after breaking the door lock and seized the narcotic substance on Wednesday.
Police are trying to identify the person who has stored the drugs in the flat.
The team has sought tenant details from the SRA to find out whether the flat is empty or allotted to anyone.
This is the second seizure of ganja from the same locality in the last one month.
On January 14, the Sakinaka police arrested a real estate broker, Ashok Mehtre (39), and seized 345.5 kgs ganga worth Rs 51.82 lakh that he had stocked on his first floor at one of the SRA’s Sangharsh Building.
Mehtre was caught from Sahar locality from where he planned to flee from Mumbai.
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone X) Mahesh Reddy said the drugs were stored in the first floor flat that was locked for a few days.
A team—inspector Arvind Shirke, assistant inspector Padvi, sub-inspector Hanumant Dhavan and detection staff—carried out the raid and seized the drugs.
“A probe is on to know whether there is a link in the two drugs seizure from the same locality in the last one month,” said the police officer.
