Spotting is light bleeding and not heavy blood flow. It's just staining and you do not need any pads or tampons. If you are having moderate to heavy bleeding, visit your doctor immediately.

Spotting with intense back pain is not a good sign when pregnant. Cramping and pain are not normal during pregnancy, it can mean something more serious.
