CHENNAI: Customs officials at Chennai airport have seized ecstasy tablets and methamphetamine crystals smuggled from the Netherlands through postal parcels. The value of the seized drugs was Rs 6.6 lakh, customs said in a release on Tuesday.
The release said based on information, customs officials had detained two unregistered postal parcels at the foreign post office.
The first parcel was addressed to a Nammakal-based person. It was found to contain a soup packet “Knorr Rundvless Jus”. On opening it, a polythene packet containing 100 MDMA tablets -- called “Blue Punisher” -- was found. The MDMA tablets were worth Rs 4 lakh.
The second parcel was addressed to a Chennai-based person. The parcel contained a greeting card with the Dutch words “gefellici teerd” (Congratulations). Inside the card, a zip lock packet containing white crystal powder was found. The powder tested positive for methamphetamine. A total 26 gram of methamphetamine crystals, worth Rs 2.6 lakh, were recovered.
The ecstasy tablets and the methamphetamine crystals were seized under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
