Blockade of Mizoram-bound trains continues for 2nd day

Silchar, Feb 16 (UNI): Rail blockade agitation by Assam residents on Badarpur (Assam)-Bairabi (Mizoram) route at Jamira station in Hailakandi district continues for second day on Tuesday.
Sources said, no freight trains to and from Mizoram could move due to the agitation called by Forum Against Mizo Aggression, a Barak Valley-based NGO.
Running of passenger trains on this route continues to remain cancelled since Covid-19 lockdown days.
The agitation has been called in protest against an attack allegedly by miscreants from Mizoram in neighbouring Assam village on February 9 in which over 10 people were injured and 20 houses belonging to Assamese people were burnt down. The agitators have been demanding withdrawal of Mizo security forces from Assam areas and allow Assam residents to return to their home safely which were burnt down by the Mizo miscreants.
“Mizo police and security forces have been deployed in Assam areas creating a sense of insecurity among the locals. Moreover, the villagers of Kachurthal area adjoining Bairabi in Mizoram’s Kolasib district, who lost their houses after they were set ablaze by Mizo miscreants, have been living under open air in other places. Their lands have been taken oiver by Mizo people. We demand that the villagers are allowed to return to the places safely,” said Forum Against Mizo Aggression president Saleh Ahmed Mazumdar.
He said, until and unless their demands are met with, the rail blockade agitation will continue.
An official said, railway protection forces along with police from local Ramnath police station in Hailakandi district on Tuesday visited Jamira station and requested the agitators to withdraw the blockade. However, the agitators didn’t budge.
