  • The Institute of Race Relations' CEO Dr Frans Cronje will step down at the end of the year.
  • Cronje has been with the IRR for 18 years and had initially planned to step down at the end of 2019.
  • While at the IRR, Cronje established the IRR's Centre For Risk Analysis.

Institute of Race Relations (IRR) CEO Dr Frans Cronje will step down at the end of the year.

He leaves the IRR after 18 years, eight of which were spent as CEO.

Cronje reportedly established the IRR's Centre For Risk Analysis, which specialises in using scenarios to help business and government leaders make decisions about investment and policy in South Africa. He has reportedly advised hundreds of local corporations, foreign investors and policy writers.

Cronje has authored two books on South Africa's future.

According to a statement released by the IRR, Cronje will leave the organisation at the end of 2021, a move that was delayed due to the global pandemic.

"The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has announced that its CEO, Dr Frans Cronje, will step down at the end of 2021 after 18 years at the institute, eight as CEO," the statement read.

"The chairman of the board of directors of the IRR, Mr Roger Crawford, thanked Dr Cronje for his long-standing and exemplary service. He added that Dr Cronje had flagged the possibility of stepping down in 2019 but later agreed to stay on to see the IRR through the Covid-19 pandemic."

IRR chief of staff John Endres said a selection committee had been formed to identify Cronje's successor.
