40-year-old tree felled in Chennai’s KK Nagar despite police complaint

Corporation officials said some influential people may be involved in the felling of the tree.
CHENNAI: A Greater Chennai Corporation park department official has filed a police complaint after some people felled a tree illegally on the Anna Main Road in K K Nagar on Sunday.
Around 5pm on Sunday when some individuals began cutting the branches of a 40-year-old rain tree, residents protested and informed the corporation and police officials. The assistant engineer filed an online police complaint too.
Sarath Kumar, a resident, said he got to know about the tree chopping incident and police reached the spot after a complaint. However, the next day, the tree was felled. “Even after informing police, how did the tree cut happen at midnight? We have complained many times. But no action was taken,” he said.
“Some influential people may be involved in this. We filed a police complaint,” said a corporation official.
DMK functionary Dhanasekaran against whom activists filed a complaint said during the construction of storm water drain the tree slanted and was about to fall on his house compound wall. “However, I have nothing to do with the tree felling. I only asked the contractor to rectify it,” he said.
