  • Police have arrested a man who they describe as the "most wanted hitman at the Glebelands Hostel".
  • Police took the man into custody in connection with the murder of two men in November.
  • The alleged hitman was found in hiding in Lamontville.

A man described by KwaZulu-Natal police as "the most wanted hitman at the Glebelands Hostel" in Umlazi has been arrested.

The arrest forms part of an investigation into a "spate of murders committed at the Glebelands Hostel in the past few years", police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said.

"On [Friday] police officers successfully arrested wanted hitman Thobani Kwazikwakhe Mahobo, 35, also known as Laqhasha. He was arrested while hiding in Lamontville.

Mahobo appeared before the Umlazi Magistrate's Court on two counts of murder and was remanded in police custody until 22 February 2021 for further investigation," Mbele said.

Mahobo is accused of the murder of Anele Chutshane and Phumlani Ntozakhe, both aged 27, on 15 November 2020.

"It is alleged that the deceased… were shot and killed by the suspect when they came out of their room at Glebelands Hostel. They were both certified dead at the scene. The accused has a pending assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm case against him after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend while she was inside her room in the Glebelands Hostel in June last year," Mbele said.

Both cases have been transferred to the provincial Organised Crime Unit for further investigation. The accused will be profiled to determine whether he is linked to other serious crimes.
