BHUBANESWAR: Running of trains and buses got delayed at different places of the state due to the Bharat Bandh call given by Congress protesting against fuel price hike. Examinees appearing for the railway examination in the state faced difficulties while reaching examination centres on Monday.

The Railway Recruitment Board non-technical popular categories (RRB NTPC) examinations were conducted at 21 centres in five cities of the state on Monday. Aspirants had appeared the tests at 12 centres in Bhubaneswar, four centres in Cuttack, two centres each at Sambalpur and Berhampur and one centre at Dhenkanal for different clerical posts, goods guard, junior assistant and other posts in the Railways.

Some examinees were seen stranded at Jaraka in Jajpur district without getting any buses or other vehicles. They could not reach the examination centre at Phulnakhara on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. “We had boarded the bus on Sunday night. The bus was stopped at Jaraka this morning because of the Bharat Bandh. We did not know that the bandh is happening in Odisha. Many of my friends have missed the first sitting,” said Suman Das from West Bengal.

Another examinee said they failed to reach the examination centre by 2pm for the second sitting because of the bandh. “We got this opportunity to appear for the examination after three years. But it is heart-breaking for us to miss the test,” he added.

Most of the examinees belong to Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand. Around 4,000 candidates had enrolled for Monday’s each sitting. First sitting had received only 23 per cent of total candidates, while 55.8 per cent of aspirants had attended the second sitting of the RRB NTPC test on Monday.

Because of the bandh, train services in the East Coast Railway (ECoR) were affected partially. As a result, few trains were controlled at different railway stations for a few minutes. Agitation at Talcher station in Angul district were held between 6am and 1pm. The rail roko was conducted for 55 minutes at Bhubaneswar, 50 minutes at Dhenkanal, 25 minutes at Puri and a few minutes at Chatrapur in Ganjam district.

Bhubaneswar-LTT special was detained at Bhubaneswar station between 7.20 am and 8am. Bhubaneswar-Balangir Special and Koraput-Bhubaneswar special trains were detained at Dhenkanal, while Puri-Anand Vihar special was detained at Puri.

Plying of buses across the state was stopped between 7am and 1pm. Later some of the buses have left for their destinations. Many peoples were seen waiting at bus stands like Baramunda bus stand here and Badambadi bus stand at Cuttack on Monday. “Though the buses were not plying during the bandh hours, most of the buses have started plying after 2pm,” said Debendra Sahu, general secretary of Odisha private bus owners’ association.
