PUDUCHERRY: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will visit Puducherry on Wednesday (Feb 17) to kickstart the party's campaign for the ensuing assembly elections.
At a press conference on Monday, chief minister V Narayanasamy made an announcement of Rahul's visit. AICC secretary Sanjay Dutt, Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee president A V Subramanian, revenue minister M O H F Shahjahan and Lok Sabha MP V Vaithilingam were present.
Rahul will interact with local fishermen and students of Bharathidasan Government College for Women before addressing a public meeting at Anglo-French Textiles ground in the evening.
"The students of Bharathidasan Government College for Women sent an email to our leader requesting him to visit the college. Our leader promised them that he will visit," said Narayanasamy.
Rahul last visited Puducherry in December 2015 to meet people affected by rain and floods. Dutt said Rahul's visit would boost the morale of the party functionaries and cadre in the territory.
Narayanasamy said the Social Democratic Alliance (SDA) decided to postpone the bandh proposed on Tuesday following pleas from business and trading community. The SDA had called for a bandh to demand that the Centre recall lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi for interfering with the day-to-day administration of the elected government and blocking its welfare and development schemes.
