Projects launched today are symbols of innovation, indigenisation : Modi

Chennai, Feb 14 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today
launched and laid the foundation stone for various projects
and termed them as symbols of innovation and indigenous
development that would further Tamil Nadu's growth.
Mr Modi, who started his address by saying 'Vanakkam Chennai,
Vanakkam Tamil Nadu'', said the Chennai city was full of energy
and enthusiasm. It is a city of knowledge and creativity.
'From Chennai today, we begin key infrastructure projects.
These projects are symbols of: Innovation and Indigenous
development. These projects will further the growth of
Tamil Nadu'', he said and talked about each and every
project.
On the foundation stone laid to modernise the 636 km long
Grand Anicut Canal System, Mr Modi said the impact of this
was going to be very big.
It will improve irrigation facilities for 2.27 lakh acres of land.
Districts of Thanjavur and Pudukkottai will gain specially,
he said and appreciated the farmers of Tamil Nadu for their
record food grain production and good use of water resources.
''For thousands of years, this Grand Anicut and its canal
systems, have been the lifeline of the rice bowl of Tamil
Nadu. The Grand Anicut is a living testimony to our glorious
past. It is also an inspiration to our Nation’s “Aatmanirbhar
Bharat” goals'', he added.
Recalling the words of the famous Tamil poet Avvaiyaar,
Mr Modi said ''when water levels rise, cultivation rises,
people prosper and the state prospers'', he added.
''We have to do whatever we can to conserve water. This is
not only a national issue. It is a global subject. Always
remember the Mantra of Per Drop More Crop...this will help
future generations'', the Prime Minister said.

On the 9 km stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase One
extension project from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar, he
said this project has been completed on schedule, despite
the global pandemic.
The civil construction activities were done by Indian
Contractors. The Rolling stock has been procured locally.
This is in line with the boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat'',
he said.
Noting that the Chennai Metro was growing rapidly, Mr Modi
said in this year’s budget, over Rs 63,000 crore have been
set aside for a 119 km of Phase two of the project.
''This is one of the largest projects sanctioned for any
city in one-go. The focus on urban transport will boost
‘Ease of Living’ for citizens here'', Mr Modi added.

Observing that improved connectivity brings convenience
and it also helps commerce, he said the Chennai Beach-
Ennore –Attipattu stretch of Golden Quadrilateral is a
high traffic density route.
There is a need to ensure faster freight movement between
Chennai Port and Kamarajar Port. The fourth line between
Chennai Beach and Attipattu will help in this respect.
The electrification of Villupuram– Thanjavur– Thiruvarur
project will be a great boon to the delta districts and
one of the major things this 228 km line will help doing
is to ensure faster movement of food grains.
