BJP leaders losing ground in face of welfare measures taken by AITC govt: Edu Min

Kolkata, Feb 14 (UNI) Trinamool Congress (AITC) Secretary General and state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee on Sunday said BJP leaders were losing ground in the face of welfare measures taken by the state government.

He said they were now indulging in rhetoric, which will not have any impact on the electorate.
Taking a veiled dig at latest rebel Dinesh Trivedi, Mr Chatterjee said that even swimmers fail to stay underwater, if they are feeling suffocated.

''How come (Trivedi) stayed so long if (he) was feeling suffocated? Even swimmers also fail to do so,'' he said, while addressing a press conference here.

Mr Chatterjee claimed that 'Duare Sarkar' (government at doorsteps) programme of the Mamata Banerjee government was a huge success. Nearly 25 lakh people have applied for caste certificate under it and verification process of all these have been completed, he said.

The Minister said the way petrol and diesel prices were increasing, these were likely to soon cross the Rs 100 mark.
''People are being pushed to a corner, owing to increase in prices of food and other essential items because of the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel," he added.

Meanwhile, the AITC on Sunday demanded a probe into how Dinesh Trivedi was given a chance to speak on Budget discussion in the Rajya Sabha, despite his name not being recommended by the party.
Mr Trivedi resigned from the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
